Soi Cowboy is a single 150-metre lane of go-go bars running between Sukhumvit Soi 21 and Soi 23 in the Asok district of Bangkok, and it is the one bar street in the city that looks like the postcard. Wall-to-wall neon on both sides, women in bikinis and cowboy hats sitting on stools outside the doors, tables in the middle of the lane, and the Terminal 21 mall and two train stations a few hundred metres away.

The name is the street’s own history. T.G. “Cowboy” Edwards, a retired US Air Force man who wore a Stetson, opened the first bar here in 1977, and the lane grew up around it through the 1980s and 1990s into what it is now: roughly 40 bars on a stretch you can walk end to end in two minutes. It has never had the sprawl of Nana Plaza and never wanted it.

What is here (August 2026). Long-standing go-go bars with big stages and proper sound systems — Baccara, Tilac, Crazy House, Long Gun, Dollhouse, Cowboy 2 and Shark are names that have been here for years — and a handful of smaller rooms that change hands more often. A few have an open front so you can see the stage from the lane; most have a curtain and a doorman. Several bars completed renovations in 2025 according to forum reports, and the general view among regulars is that the top rooms on Cowboy are in better shape now than they have been in a decade. There are no beer bars to speak of; the “beer bar” here is a plastic chair in the middle of the soi with a bottle from the 7-Eleven at the Soi 23 end, which is a perfectly good way to spend twenty minutes deciding where to go.

How it works and what it costs. Walk in, sit down, a waitress brings a drink, and the ladies’ drink system does the rest. A beer is typically $5–6 (฿160–200) and a ladies’ drink $6.50–8 (฿220–260), reported as of August 2026; soft drinks are about $3.50 (฿115). Some of the renovated flagship rooms charge a little more for everything and have the best line-ups and shows to justify it. There is no cover anywhere on the soi. Most bars now display a drinks list by the door; the long-running ones are generally straight on the bill, and the way to keep them that way is to pay each round rather than run a tab until you know the room.

When to go. The soi lights up around 19:00 and the first hour is the easiest for conversation: staff are fresh, music is lower, and the women sitting outside will happily chat before the crowds arrive. It fills from 21:00, peaks between 22:30 and 01:00, and the Sukhumvit legal close is 02:00 — Asok is not in one of the city’s 4am zones, whatever the sign on the door says. Thursday to Saturday are the big nights. Sunday and Monday are quieter, cheaper in spirit, and the regulars’ favourite.

Who it suits. Men who find Nana overwhelming; men who want to sit outside with a drink and watch a bar street instead of being inside one; photographers (the neon is the best in Bangkok and nobody minds a wide shot of the lane — do not photograph individual women without asking). It is also the easiest of the three go-go districts to reach from a “normal” hotel, because Asok is the transport hub of Sukhumvit. We would still send a first-timer to Pattaya before either Bangkok district — cheaper, bigger, more relaxed — but Cowboy is the Bangkok one we would choose for ourselves.

Around it. Nana Plaza is two BTS stops west; Sukhumvit Soi 11 is one. Soi 22 and Soi 33 (“Soi Dead Artists”, a street of hostess bars named after painters) are walkable and quieter. Terminal 21 across the junction has a food court that does a $2 plate of pad kaprao, which is the right way to start a Cowboy night. If you have been chatting with someone online before you landed — and most guys who come back a second time had been, see the online-dating guide — Asok is where you would meet her for dinner, not here.

Safety. One of the safest bar streets in Asia: short, busy, well-lit, with tourist police in the area and hotels at both ends. The realistic risks are a tab that grows faster than you counted and a phone lifted in the Saturday crush. Agree taxi fares or use the meter, keep small notes, and leave the soi by 02:00 when the plainclothes police are about. Drugs are a prison sentence in Thailand; do not let anyone convince you otherwise.

Highlights

  • + Best-looking bar street in Bangkok
  • + Compact — see it all in ten minutes
  • + Tables in the lane to sit and watch
  • + Two train lines next door

Good for

  • first-timers who find Nana too much
  • sitting outside and people-watching
  • photographs of the neon
  • men staying around Asok

Drawbacks

  • Fewer bars than Nana
  • Loud inside; go early to talk
  • No cheap beer bars — BYO from the 7-Eleven or pay go-go prices

How to get there

BTS Asok or MRT Sukhumvit, then five minutes on foot up Asok Montri Road; the neon is on your right. From Nana Plaza, two BTS stops or a $1.50 (฿40–60) motorbike taxi.

Safety note

Very safe; short, busy and well-lit with hotels at both ends. Watch your tab and your phone, and be out by the legal 02:00 close.

Soi Cowboy: quick answers

What time does Soi Cowboy open and close?

+
Bars open around 19:00 and the lane peaks from about 22:30 to 01:00. Asok is not in a 4am zone, so the legal close is 02:00 and the street empties quickly after that. Early evening is the best time to talk.

How much are drinks on Soi Cowboy?

+
About $5–6 (฿160–200) for a beer and $6.50–8 (฿220–260) for a ladies’ drink in most bars, reported as of August 2026. Renovated flagship rooms charge a little more. There is no cover charge on the soi.

Is Soi Cowboy safe?

+
Yes — it is short, busy, well-lit and policed, with hotels at both ends. The usual bar-street sense applies: check your bill, pay as you go, keep your phone in a front pocket, and never touch drugs in Thailand.

Can I take photos on Soi Cowboy?

+
Wide shots of the neon from the lane are fine and everyone does it. Do not photograph individual women or the inside of bars without asking; doormen will stop you and they are right to.
