Sinulog Festival, Cebu
The third Sunday of January — 17 January 2027 — with the grand parade on the Sunday and street parties, fluvial processions and concerts through the week before it. Cebu City: the Basilica del Santo Niño, Osmeña Boulevard and the parade route, with the party spilling into Mango Square
The biggest festival in the Philippines: a week of street parties in Cebu City climaxing in a nine-hour dance parade for the Santo Niño on the third Sunday of January. The city is at its friendliest and loudest, hotels sell out months ahead, and prices double.
Sinulog is Cebu's festival for the Santo Niño — the image of the child Jesus that Magellan gave to the queen of Cebu in 1521 and that the city has venerated ever since. It is a religious festival that has grown into the largest street party in the country: a week of concerts, processions and neighborhood parties leading up to a grand parade on the third Sunday of January that takes most of the day, with contingents in costume dancing the two-steps-forward, one-step-back sinulog to drums along Osmeña Boulevard.
For a visitor it is Cebu at maximum volume. The city's normal warmth turns into something close to a national holiday: strangers hand you food, every bar on Mango Avenue is trading, house parties spill onto pavements, and the crowd is enormous, good-natured and overwhelmingly Filipino rather than foreign. There is also a serious devotional side — the dawn masses at the basilica are packed with people who have queued since before dawn, and it is worth seeing that as well as the party.
Practicalities matter here more than for any other event on this calendar. Hotels in Cebu City sell out two to three months ahead and charge double or more; book by October. Roads on the parade route close from before dawn and taxis simply stop working, so stay within walking distance of where you want to be. Cebu has run liquor bans on parade day in some years and not others, so check locally. Pickpocketing in the crush is the one real risk. And if this is not your thing, avoid Cebu that week entirely — a normal Cebu weekend is an easier trip.
Why go
It is the best party in the Philippines and one of the great festivals of Asia, and Cebuanos are the most welcoming people in the country before you add a million visitors and a drum line. Book early or come another week.
