The practical layer
Country by country
The trip is decided city by city, but the paperwork, the money and the culture are decided country by country. Here is how the six compare for a man with a US passport.

| Country | Visa (US passport) | Currency | English | Best months | Cities |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thailand | US passports get a visa exemption stamp on arrival — 60 days as of August 2026, with a cabinet-approved cut to 30 days pending publication in the Royal Gazette, so check the week you fly. | THB ฿ | Functional in the bar trade, hotels and tourist areas; | November to February for the weather; | Pattaya, Bangkok, Phuket (Patong) |
| Philippines | US passports get 30 days visa-free on arrival with six months’ passport validity and an onward ticket, plus a free eTravel registration filed online within 72 hours of landing. | PHP ₱ | Near-universal and genuinely good. | December to February for the coolest, driest weather and the liveliest bars; | Angeles City, Manila, Cebu, Subic Bay |
| Cambodia | US passports need a visa, and both routes give 30 days. | USD $ | Good in the bar trade, hotels and among the young professional class in Phnom Penh, and often excellent among the NGO and hospitality crowd; | November to February for dry, cooler weather. | Phnom Penh |
| Vietnam | US passports need a visa and the 90-day e-visa is the one to get: $25 single entry or $50 multiple entry, applied for at the official portal evisa.gov.vn, approved in about three to five working days. | VND ₫ | Weak outside tourism, hospitality and the young urban professional class. | December to April in the south; | Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi |
| Indonesia | US passports need a visa on arrival. | IDR Rp | Moderate. | April to October in Bali for the dry season; | Bali, Jakarta |
| Malaysia | US passports get 90 days visa-free on arrival for tourism, the most generous stamp in this guide, with no fee and no application. | MYR RM | Excellent — the best in this guide after the Philippines. | Any — Kuala Lumpur is hot and humid year-round with a daily afternoon storm. | Kuala Lumpur |

THBThe biggest, oldest and best-organized nightlife country on earth — and the one most first trips should start with.
Thailand
Thailand is a kingdom of about 66 million people on the Southeast Asian mainland, and it runs the largest and most practiced nightlife industry aimed at foreign men anywhere in the world. Pattaya is our joint #1 destination, Bangkok is the best big city in the region, and Phuket is the expensive beach version. It is cheap, safe, extremely easy and slightly harder work than the Philippines, because the English is worse. US passports get a 60-day stamp as of August 2026 — a cut to 30 days has been approved and is waiting to be published.
Pattaya · Bangkok · Phuket (Patong)
PHPThe English-speaking option: warmer, cheaper, easier to talk to, and the country most of our readers end up preferring.
Philippines
The Philippines is an archipelago of 7,641 islands and about 115 million people, and it is the only country in this guide where you can hold a real conversation on night one. Angeles City is our joint #1 destination alongside Pattaya, Manila and Cebu are strong seconds, and Subic Bay is the quiet beach version. Rooms are cheaper than Thailand, hotels are far more relaxed about visitors, and Manila has nonstop flights from five US cities. The scene is smaller and the food is worse.
Angeles City · Manila · Cebu · Subic Bay
USDSmall, cheap, dollar-priced and refreshingly unpoliced — the connoisseur’s side trip rather than a first destination.
Cambodia
Cambodia is a country of about 17 million people between Thailand and Vietnam, and it prices everything in US dollars. Phnom Penh is the only city in this guide worth your evenings, and it is a tier-two destination: a compact riverside scene on Street 136 and around, cheaper than anywhere else on this site, and much smaller than Pattaya or Angeles City. Come for four or five nights on the way somewhere else, not for a fortnight, and read the safety notes twice.
Phnom Penh
VNDThe best country in the region to spend a month in, and the hardest one to meet a woman in on a two-week holiday.
Vietnam
Vietnam is a country of about 100 million people running 1,000 miles down the east coast of the mainland, and it is booming. Ho Chi Minh City is a tier-two destination with a real but scattered scene; Hanoi is tier three and thinner still. The 90-day e-visa is the most generous in this guide, the food is the best in Asia, the coffee is superb and the prices are low — but English is weak, the nightlife is policed, and it is not a place to land cold and expect Pattaya.
Ho Chi Minh City · Hanoi
IDRA magnificent country and, for this particular trip, the weakest on our list — we would rather you knew that before you booked.
Indonesia
Indonesia is the world’s fourth most populous country, about 280 million people across 17,000 islands, and the largest Muslim-majority nation on earth. Bali and Jakarta are both tier three. Bali is a superb holiday with a young Western party crowd and very few Indonesian women in it; Jakarta has a real scene buried in a hard, expensive, traffic-choked megacity. A new criminal code took effect in January 2026. Come for the country, not for the purpose of this site.
Bali · Jakarta
MYRThe best-run country in the region, the best English after the Philippines, and a nightlife scene that will not hold you for a week.
Malaysia
Malaysia is a country of about 34 million people either side of the South China Sea, with excellent English, a 90-day visa-free stamp for Americans and the highest standard of living in this guide outside Singapore. Kuala Lumpur is our only destination here and it is tier three: Changkat Bukit Bintang and Jalan P. Ramlee are good nights out in a good city, but the drinks are the priciest in the guide and the scene is a fraction of Bangkok’s. A superb three-night stopover; a poor two-week trip.
