The Caravelle Saigon opened on Lam Son Square in 1959, when it was one of the tallest and most modern buildings in Vietnam, and it spent the next sixteen years as the address for foreign correspondents, embassies and anyone who wanted a view of what was happening. It is still there, now as a large five-star with a modern tower behind the original block, directly opposite the Opera House and a two-minute walk from Dong Khoi and Nguyen Hue.

You book it for the position and the bar. The Saigon Saigon rooftop bar on the ninth floor has been serving since the hotel opened: chequerboard tiles, dark timber, live music, and small balconies looking straight down at the Opera House and along Dong Khoi. It is the single most atmospheric drink in Vietnam and it is worth the price of the cocktail whether or not you sleep upstairs.

Rooms are what you expect of a well-kept international five-star — quiet, generous, dark wood, marble bathrooms, proper blackout curtains — with the tower rooms newer and the Signature floors adding lounge access, a separate breakfast and evening drinks. There is an outdoor pool, the Kara Spa, a gym and a spread of restaurants and bars downstairs. Service is the reason it keeps its regulars.

Practical geography: you are five minutes on foot from the Le Thanh Ton alleys, one minute from the Opera House metro station on Line 1, and about eighteen minutes' walk — or a two-dollar Grab — from Bui Vien, which is far enough to sleep and close enough to visit.

Now the part our readers care about, answered honestly: we could not confirm a visitor policy. The Caravelle is a formal, corporate five-star with a staffed lobby and controlled lift access, and the specialist directories that list it say to expect formal identification procedures rather than a wave-through. Vietnamese law requires every hotel to register everyone who sleeps in a room, so a visitor will always need an ID card whatever the property. If this matters to your trip, ask by email before you book — and read the guest-friendly hotels explainer so you know what you are asking. The rest of our picks are on the Saigon hotels page.

Caravelle Saigon: quick answers

Is the Caravelle Saigon guest-friendly?

+
We could not confirm it, and we will not guess. It is a formal five-star with a staffed lobby, and directories that list it warn to expect strict identification procedures. Vietnamese law requires every guest in a room to be registered. Ask by email before you book.

Can non-guests drink at the Saigon Saigon Bar?

+
Yes. The ninth-floor bar is open to the public and has been since 1959, and it is one of the best hours in the city. Expect cocktails around $9–12 as of August 2026 and a smart-casual dress code — a collar and closed shoes.

How much does the Caravelle cost?

+
Rates started around $140 a night in August 2026 for a standard room, more for the tower and Signature floors with lounge access. That is roughly double the mid-range District 1 rate and buys the best position in the city.
